An op-ed written by Wael Abbas for the Washington Post, asking the American administration to stop their support of Mubarak, the article discussing the assassination of late president Anwar Sadat which cost the author his job, Abbas’s testimony about the infamous Mass Sexual Harassment that took place in Down Town Cairo during the feast of 2006, why Abbas withdrew from the DW’s BoBs awards competition, and why he refused to meet president G. W. Bush are just a few of the articles written between 2006 and 2013 found in this interesting and rare insight into the modern history and recent events in Egypt.
These articles originally appeared as op-eds for some of the worlds most prestigious international media outlets, including The Washington Post, Slate Magazine, BBC and The German News Agency (dpa). Other articles were collected a collection of other outlets; from news reports, to social media rants, to blog posts.
Abbas responded to the overwhelming requests to collect all his writings in one place and he obliged his thousands of readers in an attempt to piece a puzzle of modern history together. Another, more serious reason the author found he had to do this was that under an increasingly policed state along with diminishing freedom of expression, the articles were starting to disappear from the Internet and elsewhere. Most of the articles you will read in this collection shed light on an era that has become history, the era of Mubarak, life and freedoms under his rule.
It is the author’s hope that you find the stories and memories embedded in the articles informative, reflective and amusing. Even the avid readers and followers of Abbas’s writings will find many new stories they have not come across before.
